An Ayurvedic Christmas treat

This time of year, it seems like everyone is fighting some kind of sickness... whether it be a cold, the flu or that stubborn cough that seems to be going around, I would be willing to bet that just about anyone would benefit from some immune boosters right around now.
Well, look no further! This time-tested brew helps strengthen your immune system, thanks to its powerful adaptogenic properties.
So what exactly is an adaptogen? Only one of my favourite categories of herbs! Adaptogens are herbs that boost energy, restore vitality, and increase the body’s resilience to the stresses of modern life. The added bonus is they have no noted harmful side effects! They are also the prime herbs used for increasing life force and one’s quality of life as we get older.
The adaptogens used in this tonic recipe (ashwagandha and shatavari) have a wonderful ability to work with your body to restore balance. They “adapt” to whatever stressors (whether physical, chemical, or biological) are weakening your body and adjust the settings inside of you to heal the issue. On top of that, they are full of the antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory healing properties of ginger, cinnamon, and raw honey.
This immune tonic is best taken preventatively and can be taken every day through the colder seasons.
Adaptogenic Immune Tonic:
1/4 tablespoon dried holy basil (tulsi)
1/4 tablespoon dried ashwagandha root
1/4 tablespoon dried shatavari root
1/2 tablespoon fresh gingerroot, minced
2 cardamom pods
1 star anise
1 cinnamon stick
2 cups water
Raw honey, to taste
Milk (try oat or coconut), to taste
Combine 2 cups of water with holy basil, ashwagandha, shatavari, and gingerroot in a small saucepan and heat on medium
Bring the liquid to a slight boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes
Add the cardamom, star anise and cinnamon. Simmer for another 5 minutes, then strain out the herbs
Pour into two mugs, and allow it to cool a bit. Add honey and milk to taste, and serve immediately
