Seasons change

It's that time of year again... Mother Nature is shifting from one season into the next, and if I know one thing, it is that we need to adapt with that change.
Spring is dominated by Kaphs dosha, which means that it feels heavy, cool, soft, dense, stable, solid and cloudy. Ayurveda teaches us that like increases like, so by its very nature, springtime tends to increase kapha. Kapha accumulation is somewhat inevitable for most of us by winter's end, so spring has the potential to add too many kapha elements.
Adapting to live effectively within this season, try adding things like waking with the sunrise, eating lighter foods, and getting more active. Aim for a seasonal diet and lifestyle that invites a little extra lightness, sharpness, dryness and heat into your life. Enjoy foods like pomegranate, apples, Brussels sprouts and beet greens. Avoid heavy or watery veggies like avocado, cucumber, olives, sweet potato, squash, or zucchini. Add ancient grains like amaranth, buckwheat, millet and oats to your meals. Beans, lentils and tempeh are ideal for this time of year. Eggs, venison and freshwater fish are great sources of protein.
Spring is a natural time to socialize and to initiate (or rekindle) meaningful relationships. Get out there and enjoy your friends and loved ones! Try massaging your skin with warm, organic sesame oil and then rinse off in a hot shower. Always make sure you drink enough fluid to stay hydrated.
Spring is an amazing season, but it flows better if you make a few adjustments to get out of your winter cave and into the sunlight.
