Spring has (almost) sprung!

I know that I have not posted very much lately, and I have not even been online as much these days… but I find that this happens every year around this time. Winter is a very “kapha” season according to the science of Ayurveda, and given that kapha brings properties like cold, slow, stagnant and heavy, I find that is usually the best time of year to hibernate and recharge, so that I have the energy to tackle the new year and the spring with such force that it hopefully helps me blow all of my goals out of the water. I do this every year, and every year I get a little bit better at it and I get closer to those goals.
This year has been no different, although my goals that I am pursuing at the moment are pretty different from my usual norm… so things like “grow my garden to maximize colour and nutrient density”, “remember to BREATHE deep every hour”, and “learn to cook something new every month for the year” have replaced previous goals, which looked more like “try to only party on the weekends” and “invent the best hangover-prevention elixir known to man”. I guess that with age, comes maturity, and comes a whole new set of goals and ways of looking at life.
So, to help dig myself out of this heavy, cold kapha season, I am spending the weekend gathering the tools I need to bring more balance into my home and my life… so things like hanging fresh herbs around the space, cooking with light, nutrient-dense ingredients and opening all the windows is critical this time of year. I really notice the difference that these simple actions make in my own energy and my life as a whole.
On top of that, garden planning has begun! I am thinking of trying to set up a seed swap with a few of my friends and can maybe incorporate a spring tea party into that. I plan to do a lot of really neat and different stuff with my growing space this year, so stay tuned!
What do you do to help prepare for spring?
